In 2025, Labubu — wide-eyed, gremlin-like vinyl toys created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung — surged in global popularity. Distributed in blind box format by Chinese toy giant Pop Mart, these collectible creatures became part fashion accessory, part meme, part emotional support companion. As supply chains faltered, fake Labubus filled the gaps — their mutated forms impossible to avoid, celebrated from the corner shop to TikTok videos like Hunting for the Ugliest Lafufu!

Interesting Lovely assembles a visual archive of these bootlegs, sourced from TikTok, Vinted and eBay. morphing from near-identical Pop Mart originals into janky, one-eyed, bald cousins.​ Alongside the images, a chaotic collage of headlines charts Labubu’s viral rise and semi-ironic fall (right). Together, they examine how authenticity, value, and desire operate within fandom and algorithmic culture.

The book takes its name from the packaging of a knock-off Labubu, where the original blind box series title Exciting Macaron has been clumsily photoshopped out and replaced with a translated: Interesting Lovely.
